I am compiling a document researching the war memorial and war graves at The Leigh.Alan was born in Liverpool in 1901 and was the son of Charles Wedmore Dyson of Tredington and Amelia Lawley of Kidderminster who had married in Bristol in 1900. The family appear to have moved to The Leigh by 1905 and they are still living here in 1911 with father Charles employed as a carpenter and Alan still at school.Alan served in the Royal Navy as Able Seaman, No JJ9575, aboard HMS Veteran. Although ordered in January 1918 HMS Veteran was not launched until April 1919 so we do not know for certain if Alan actually served during the First World War. He died on 30 September 1921 at his fathers home, The Old School House, The Leigh. He died as a result of malaria and heart failure and was buried at St Catherines, The Leigh. HMS Veteran was commissioned into the Royal Navy on the 13 November 1919 with the pennant number D72. After commissioning she was assigned to the 3rd Destroyer Flotilla of the Atlantic Fleet. It seems unlikely that Alan would have been exposed to malaria on the Atlantic station so it is assumed that he had previous service aboard a different vessel and did have service during the war.
